Milo Slayers wraps up his residency at La Bellone with a presentation on flow!

“Flow” and “bounce” are words often used in hip-hop culture, sometimes trying to bind usage to form, but what can these vague words generate? Can they have definitions? Can they give other readings to movement?
To conclude his residency at La Bellone, Milo Slayers brings a small presentation focusing on the practice around Flow from a dramaturgical perspective.

Soon in premiere: A crock of bull at the crack of dawn by Rachid Laachir!

In order to control life we try to name it, in order to control death we perform it.
In A crock of bull at the crack of dawn, playwright, performer and designer Rachid Laachir explores metamorphoses. Using body, voice, costumes and other objects, he creates characters at the intersection of the natural, the human, the magical and the mystical.
Thursday 16th of June, A crock of bull at the crack of dawn has its premiere at Kunstencentrum BUDA in Kortrijk. You can find tickets here!

16.05 at KWP
International programmers discover the unique performing arts scene of Flanders, Wallonia and Brussels. An initiative of Kunstenpunt/Flanders Arts Institute, Wallonie-Bruxelles Théâtre Danse (WBTD) and Kunstenfestivaldesarts, in collaboration with several partners from the Brussels performing arts scene.
Plat(e)form(e) was born from a desire to support and highlight the local performing arts scene. By drawing on the presence of international professionals we hope to promote new networks and lasting exchanges.
Plat(e)form(e) presents performances, works in progress and pitches by artists. Through discussions and feedback sessions, we want to open a temporary space for mutual learning and reflection on what it means to create and present (inter)nationally today.
On 16.05 Plat(e)form(e) will take place here at KWP (Pianofabriek), showing five performances for an audience of professionals. Take a look at the website of Kunstenpunt for more info on the program.

Read Etcetera’s review of DEMONstratio here!

“The performance offers a sequence of fascinating movements, trying to show different dimensions of their battle within this square.”
Last Friday, “DEMONstratio” by Milø Slayers premiered at Charleroi Danse’s Legs Festival, and it did not escape Etcetera’s notice either. Rojda Karakuş wrote a nice review of the performance, which you can read here!

Kate McIntosh is making a new performance called Lake Life… and she needs your help!
This call is for mixed age audiences — both adults and young people aged 10+ years.

We invite you to join in the studio for a couple of hours – we’ll play out some ideas together, and ask what you think about it. It will be fun… and it’s free…
Please join! Pass the invitation to friends!

It will happen here:

Premiere of DEMONstratio!

Tomorrow the 31st of March, Milø Slayers’ highly anticipated performance premieres at the Legs Festival at La Raffinerie, presented by Charleroi danse and Kaaitheater.
For his performance, Milø was inspired by the recently discovered racist inscription on Kasimir Malevich’s famous painting Black Square (1915). Milø addresses the tension that even the most abstract art can never be free of politics. Within the clean lines of a perfectly lit square, he and his three performers seek an incantatory counterweight in the subconscious power of voice and movement. Light and dark, reason and feeling, certainty and uncertainty: sharp binary opposites are there to transcend them.
Right after the show, we will danse into the night at the Crazy Legs party, where Milø has been given carte blanche for an experimental and whimsical evening…
Friday March 10th: 2X KWP at bits of dance!

Leading up to its premiere on 31 March, Milø Slayers will perform a work-in-progress showing of DEMONstratio next Friday at 17:00 at the bits of dance festival in Bruges, presented by Dans in Brugge.
Later that evening, at 20:00 Lisa Vereertbrugghen is going to perform Disquiet — sensational aesthetics of a technokin.
Both performances can be perfectly combined. Don’t miss out on them!

Accompany Class (morning training)

Accompany Class is a morning training offered for the freelance dance community in Brussels, between
30th of Jan until 3rd of March 2023. This round of training is a pilot proposal of this system.
We are a group of freelance dance artists coming together to do this thing called ‘morning class’. We are not quite sure what this is anymore… We no longer work through companies and we no longer have a clear idea of what to train. From this place of not knowing, we have come together and organized a rotational-system in which we will all facilitate ‘class/training’ for and with each other.
As the space was donated to us for this pilot proposal, attendance is free of charge. Registration is recommended and appreciated but not necessary. Help us to keep track of the amount of participants by sending an email to accompanyclass@gmail.com

Open studio presentation: The Ferris wheel turns when the wind blows — Sana Ghobbeh 17 & 18 November

Work in progress: The Ferris wheel turns when the wind blows — Sana Ghobbeh
Sana Ghobbeh is an Iranian-born artist and art researcher based in Brussels. Her work focuses on the relationships between urban infrastructure and the sociopolitical history they carry within them. She draws from archives, old photos of the city, blue prints, maps, local testimonies, etc. to then allow this data to be transformed by the ongoing flow passing through the infrastructure’s space in everyday life. The result is a story-telling performance that transmits the discoveries of small poetic counter-actions that nevertheless can shake the stability of architectural elements favouring oppression.
In ‘The Ferris wheel turns when the wind blows’ Sana introduces us to the private property of a historical figure. This particular plot of land is located in the Evin neighborhood that stretches from the northwest of Tehran to the foot of the Alborz mountains.

Workshop: “conversing with masculinity” by Kevin Fay

With images and poetry from previous ‘conversing with masculinity’ circles, this workshop opens a safe space for experimentation. Together, we will practice pranayama, and we will explore scores for improvised partner dancing. In these, we’ll sustain intimate forms of contact while moving with specific qualities and breath coordinations (e.g. ‘persistent pressing’, ‘precarious pushing’, ‘softly sinking’, ‘staying power’). Also, we will extend a practice called ‘Questions Dance’ while reflecting on notions of physical comfort and care.
Workshop description:
To acknowledge, examine, and deconstruct heterocolonial, Europatriarchal filters in words, the performative reading circle, ‘conversing with masculinity’, proposes an open sharing of techniques and strategies to look at how language* feels.
In the circle, we will read, listen, create, and move in collective attempts to loosen up and imagine sensuous language(s).
We will listen to excerpts of texts** by others, and we’ll frame our experience by writing down specific words or sounds ourselves. With personal language lexicons, we will then explore how individual, intuitive notions are organized in poems and images. To move, we will practice pranayama and improvise partnered dancing.
The circle strives to provide safe time and space. We will prioritize and address questions, ideas, and concerns together as they arise.
*The working language is English, but translators are available. Please reach out if you know that you would like this support.
**Source materials are available upon request. Please feel free to suggest texts.
The workshop will take place from Monday 21 November to Friday 25 November at studio Magnolia in GC Elzenhof, Kroonlaan 12, 1050 Ixelles.
Those who would like more info or want to participate may send an email to: kevin.m.fay@gmail.com

Dossierschrijfdag: Come and work with us on your project or grant application!
Dear artist!
Will you be submitting a project or grant application to the Flemish Government on 15 September? Are you staring at the format, wondering how that complicated Excel sheet should be filled in, would you like to exchange ideas with a fellow artist, or are you at a loss for words and is synoniemen.net no longer of any help? Do the words ‘policy plan’, ‘employees with NSSO’ or ‘function-specific sub-criteria’ give you a panic attack? Or do you mainly need a focused coworking vibe? Come and write with us!
We will gather a number of artists with the same goal and deadline as you and have some experts from detheatermaker, Hiros, KWP, Caravan Production and workspacebrussels ready to answer all your questions. We provide coffee, a table, a listening ear and plenty of pep talks and know-how — you provide a tight plan, a computer and enough dossier motivation!
Let us know if you want to join us on:
30.08.2022 14:00 – 17:00 KWP, Fortstraat 35 St.-Gillis
05.09.2022 14:00 – 17:00 workspacebrussels, Onze-Lieve-Vrouw Van Vaakstraat 83

See you then!

The Waves: Een wervelwind van energie en symboliek (recensie e‑tcetera)

The Waves van Khadija El Kharraz Alami toont de kracht in zowel het samenkomen als het individuele beleven van de eigen vrouwelijkheid zonder schaamte. Stijn Demeulenaere nominated for the Sound of the Year Awards

Stijn Demeulenaere’s installation, Zijlijn / Linea Lateralis, has been nominated for the Sound Of the Year awards, in the “Composed with Sound” category. Zijlijn is a research into the underwater soundscape of the North Sea. The murky water of the North Sea makes for very low visibility, so many animals depend on sound and smell to live and exist underwater. But the North Sea is also one of the busiest and the loudest seas in the world, making the relationship between man-made noise and natural sound a very difficult one. The installation was commissioned by Concertgebouw Brugge. You can see Zijlijn at the upcoming Hear Here Festival. Other dates TBA.
