Women reclaim power in this sacred space of rage and grief.
For her immersive theatre performance SHRINE, Khadija El Kharraz Alami draws inspiration both from the work of feminist activist Silvia Federici, and from Alceste in Molière’s Le Misanthrope. Here, Alceste is the daughter of a mother, a woman who was brutally murdered by the systems in power. Alceste has been fighting in vain for years for a fair trial, but her frustration and sadness radicalise her. The injustice that has taken root in her body transforms into fury, empowering her to create chaos and disrupt the economy. She becomes an inspiration for women all over the world. They find solace in their sanctuary, their ‘shrine’, where they remember, pray, sing, make offerings, and celebrate.
El Kharraz Alami once again demonstrates how she can translate essayistic work into action, how she finds forms that render the role of the marginalised woman in our societies tangible. In SHRINE, using critical fabulation, she speculates on a possible future in the here and now. By embodying Alceste as a woman and focusing on her perspective, she asks which erased roles of women in society we can resurrect. And which buried cries will be heard.
