‘Nu är jag Medea’: Khadija El Kharraz Alami in Sweden!

30.10.23

Khadija El Kharraz Alami started the tour of ‘Nu ben ik Medea’ in Sweden. In 2018, she won awards with her performance at Theater Aan Zee. Her personal retelling of Euripides’ tragedy has not escaped Riksteatern in Sweden either. Khadija is touring the Swedish country with the English-language version, ‘Nu är jag Medea’. This weekend, she performed at Sara Kulturhus!

‘Nu ben ik Medea’ is a personal retelling of Euripides’ tragedy, interweaving the story ofMedea with her own experiences of growing up between two worlds — and about the clash of forces within yourself. Alami explains how she has been shaped by the riches from the Western and Moroccan worlds: the many traditions, differences in culture, multilingualism, believing or not believing, music, food, freedom… Until these riches collide: she stands between them and tries with all her strength to hold onto both. So she grows up further, no longer with, but between two worlds.

Tonight 12 October, transdisciplinary artist Roel Heremans will perform at Mindblowers 2023: Power, a collaboration between KVS and VUB. Starting from the idea that scientists and artists are the visionaries of society, KVS and VUB created this project to give these voices a stage.

In the context of his work The NeuroRight Arcades, Roel Heremans is invited to talk this evening about the power one might have over our brains in the near future. The retro game consoles will also be on display and in use at KVS for a month. With The NeuroRight Arcades, he points out the dangers that the battle for our minds represents for human integrity.

Globe Aroma invites Samah Hijawi for two writing workshops

Globe Aroma is an artistic work and meeting place in Brussels, offering support and a network to artists, creators and art lovers from newcomer backgrounds. Kunstenwerkplaats collaborates structurally with Globe Aroma.

KWP artist, chef and astrologer Samah Hijawi was invited to give two writing workshops this month: “The kitchen as a place of resistance” and “Ode to plants.” Globe Aroma is hosting a series of writing workshops in June and July, Writing to make it happen, around different writing practices, futurologist approaches, and socio-political topics.

With her long-term project Kitchen.Table, Samah explores diverse culinary histories and cultures to better understand how they influence our current food politics. Using the basic ingredients of the Mediterranean spice mixture Za’atar as a starting point, she delves into various food cultures, including our spiritual and mythological connections to food, and relates them to contemporary food cultures in cities.

“Flow” and “bounce” are words often used in hip-hop culture, sometimes trying to bind usage to form, but what can these vague words generate? Can they have definitions? Can they give other readings to movement?

To conclude his residency at La Bellone, Milo Slayers brings a small presentation focusing on the practice around Flow from a dramaturgical perspective.

Premiere of DEMONstratio!

DEMO Nstratio Milo Slayers promobeeld

Tomorrow the 31st of March, Milø Slayers’ highly anticipated performance premieres at the Legs Festival at La Raffinerie, presented by Charleroi danse and Kaaitheater.

For his performance, Milø was inspired by the recently discovered racist inscription on Kasimir Malevich’s famous painting Black Square (1915). Milø addresses the tension that even the most abstract art can never be free of politics. Within the clean lines of a perfectly lit square, he and his three performers seek an incantatory counterweight in the subconscious power of voice and movement. Light and dark, reason and feeling, certainty and uncertainty: sharp binary opposites are there to transcend them.

Right after the show, we will danse into the night at the Crazy Legs party, where Milø has been given carte blanche for an experimental and whimsical evening…

Accompany Class is a morning training offered for the freelance dance community in Brussels, between
30th of Jan until 3rd of March 2023. This round of training is a pilot proposal of this system.

We are a group of freelance dance artists coming together to do this thing called ‘morning class’. We are not quite sure what this is anymore… We no longer work through companies and we no longer have a clear idea of what to train. From this place of not knowing, we have come together and organized a rotational-system in which we will all facilitate ‘class/training’ for and with each other.

As the space was donated to us for this pilot proposal, attendance is free of charge. Registration is recommended and appreciated but not necessary. Help us to keep track of the amount of participants by sending an email to accompanyclass@gmail.com

Friday February 10th Ezra Weill and Marie De Broeck are showing “Boombox”, an homage to cassette tapes and the way that they changed the world, through their endearing, indestructible outer shells to their delicate spools of polyester plastic film. Everybody is welcome at 17h at De Pianofabriek!

Kunstendag voor Kinderen 2022: Atelier Léon

21.11.22

Work in progress: The Ferris wheel turns when the wind blows — Sana Ghobbeh

Sana Ghobbeh is an Iranian-born artist and art researcher based in Brussels. Her work focuses on the relationships between urban infrastructure and the sociopolitical history they carry within them. She draws from archives, old photos of the city, blue prints, maps, local testimonies, etc. to then allow this data to be transformed by the ongoing flow passing through the infrastructure’s space in everyday life. The result is a story-telling performance that transmits the discoveries of small poetic counter-actions that nevertheless can shake the stability of architectural elements favouring oppression.

In ‘The Ferris wheel turns when the wind blows’ Sana introduces us to the private property of a historical figure. This particular plot of land is located in the Evin neighborhood that stretches from the northwest of Tehran to the foot of the Alborz mountains.

Workshop: “conversing with masculinity” by Kevin Fay

17.10.22
Conversing with masculinity word play

With images and poetry from previous ‘conversing with masculinity’ circles, this workshop opens a safe space for experimentation. Together, we will practice pranayama, and we will explore scores for improvised partner dancing. In these, we’ll sustain intimate forms of contact while moving with specific qualities and breath coordinations (e.g. ‘persistent pressing’, ‘precarious pushing’, ‘softly sinking’, ‘staying power’). Also, we will extend a practice called ‘Questions Dance’ while reflecting on notions of physical comfort and care.

Workshop description:

To acknowledge, examine, and deconstruct heterocolonial, Europatriarchal filters in words, the performative reading circle, ‘conversing with masculinity’, proposes an open sharing of techniques and strategies to look at how language* feels.

In the circle, we will read, listen, create, and move in collective attempts to loosen up and imagine sensuous language(s).

We will listen to excerpts of texts** by others, and we’ll frame our experience by writing down specific words or sounds ourselves. With personal language lexicons, we will then explore how individual, intuitive notions are organized in poems and images. To move, we will practice pranayama and improvise partnered dancing.

The circle strives to provide safe time and space. We will prioritize and address questions, ideas, and concerns together as they arise.

*The working language is English, but translators are available. Please reach out if you know that you would like this support.

**Source materials are available upon request. Please feel free to suggest texts.

The workshop will take place from Monday 21 November to Friday 25 November at studio Magnolia in GC Elzenhof, Kroonlaan 12, 1050 Ixelles.
