All women have a built-in grain of indestructibility. And men’s task has always been to make them realize it as late as possible.” (Sans Soleil, Chris Marker)

Worldwide, at least one in three women experiences physical and/or sexual violence because they are women. As a society, we cannot find a remedy for this violence. On the contrary, in these reactionary times, this violence is experiencing a revival or even a renewed glorification. Worldwide, there is a clear backlash against women’s rights and protection, with growing misogyny both online and offline. To maintain their dominance, patriarchal and conservative forces must perpetuate and intensify the oppression of and violence against women. Over the next two years, I will be researching the artistic representation of gender-based violence and the social structures and dynamics that enable this violence. I will investigate how art can potentially provide a space for the search for justice, for and with victims/survivors, and for and with bystanders and perpetrators. To this end, I want to explore existing and new artistic methodologies that record violence, and then develop tools and frameworks that invite alternative representations — ultimately with a view to transforming the traditional dynamics surrounding gender-based violence against women, within the intimate-personal and public-social domains.
