Sarah Vanhee
Sarah Vanhee is an internationally renowned artist, performer, and author whose work has been shown over the past twenty years at prominent national and international venues, as well as in the visual arts, film, and literature. She is known for her consistently original art forms that manifest themselves both within and outside the institution. Her art is driven by radical imagination and social engagement. Embedded in a performative practice, Vanhee operates trans-disciplinarily and cross-sectorally, often through co-creation. For her, art is an instrument for bringing attention to underrepresented stories and non-dominant voices. Vanhee has worked in theaters, hospitals, libraries, community centers, prisons, private living rooms, open fields, corporate meeting rooms, etc. Recent works include dienst woorden (public word service), Mémé (performance), bodies of knowledge (nomadic classroom), collected screams (lecture performance), The Making of Justice (film), Oblivion (performance), etc.
Although strongly rooted in the local community, Vanhee’s work has been presented internationally in various contexts, such as KFDA (Brussels), Festival d’automne (Paris), Wiener Festwochen, FTA (Montreal), Museo de Reina Sofia (Madrid), Teatre Lliure (Barcelona), Festival Actoral (Marseille), BIT Teatergarasjen (Bergen), HAU (Berlin), Theater Frascati (Amsterdam), Van Abbe Museum (Eindhoven), Centre Pompidou (Metz), etc.
As an artist, she was affiliated with CAMPO (since 2009) and Manyone (2015−2022) for many years. Since 2023, she has been supported by HIROS.
Vanhee collaborated on Untranslatables and is the author of Lecture For Every One (APE), The Miraculous Life of Claire C (Onomatopee) and TT (Campo). She has published various texts in artistic and academic contexts.
In 2022, she obtained her artistic doctorate at ARIA and KCA.
In addition to her artistic projects, Vanhee is active as a public speaker, guest lecturer, advisor, coach, dramaturg, and mentor.
