How do we use the body as a conduit for language? Under what circumstances must the body adjust to or contradict words? And what happens when meanings begin to shift?

Spoken language rarely arrives alone; it travels with gesture. We emphasise or soften our words, stretch their meaning or brush them off. The silent contract between language and movement forms the core of Terms & Conditions.

Etymology traces where words come from and how their meanings change through use. Berger Myhre draws on this to reveal how language itself moves, almost like a dance. With humour and wit, she explores how the body encounters words and language alike: how literal and figurative meanings collide, how words slip, thoughts connect, and puns surface.

The meaning of a word is its use.
