Paul lost both his parents in the concentration camps; Ingeborg is the daughter of a Nazi. In postwar Vienna, they fall in love, then lose touch, wander through Europe, and each emerges as the poetic voice of a generation. Meanwhile, they write letters to each other throughout their lives. These letters tell the story of a dramatic love, of a Europe rife with trauma and guilt, and of two poets who seek in language a way out of the burden of the past. What words can they find to bridge the distance between them?
The compelling and enigmatic correspondence between Ingeborg Bachmann and Paul Celan serves as the starting point for the new performance by Zephyr Brüggen and David Roos. Together with musician Timon Persoon, they explore what Paul and Ingeborg have to tell us in the year 2026.De gedroomden premiered on March 13, 2026, at Theater Frascati in Amsterdam.
