In Who’s your Daddy?, Anne-Laure Vandeputte examines the social blueprint of parenthood. In this new research, she starts from the question: what do we consider a successful’ family, and which beliefs drive this ideal? To what extent does the outside world determine our view on the intimate space of our family, and the individual choices we make regarding whether or not to have children? In doing so, she focuses specifically on queer family structures and family forms that fall outside the traditional nuclear family, while also questioning the position of the mother as the central caregiver. This research provides the ideal breeding ground for creating abrasive performative material and relatable, layered characters, without searching for conclusive answers. What if parenthood is elevated to performance? Isn’t parenthood already intrinsically performative, when a certain role is assumed in order to relate to a creature that is completely dependent on you? And what freedom can be found within that performativity?

In this project, Vandeputte uses male drag as a performative form. Drag is an art form that, among other things, challenges social rules by exaggerating stereotypes for example. She explores the performative freedom of drag, connects it to the theme of parenthood, and seeks cross-pollination with her background in text-based theater.

Just as in her previous work, the performance My Body as a Commodity, she explores the boundary between the theatricality of reality and the purely performative. In this way, she aims to break open our social narratives on stage and question them together with the audience.
