The musical theater production Mayken takes its cue from the obscurity surrounding Mayken Verhulst, the matriarch of the Bruegels and one of the greatest female artists of the 16th century. All of her own paintings and miniatures have been lost. The production portrays the absence of women in history and all the emotions that such a void entails. Veroline Vanderbeek and Abel Baeck portray Mayken as a hybrid figure aware of her disappearance from history. From that vantage point, she speaks, sings, and shouts a contemporary confession set to electronic music. The theater performance forms a diptych with the white cube” presentation for museums, thereby granting Mayken a place in the museum five centuries later.
