Silke Huysmans en Hannes Dereere
Silke Huysmans (born in Brazil, 1989) and Hannes Dereere (born in Belgium, 1990) live and work in Brussels. Silke studied drama at the KASK School of Arts in Ghent and Hannes studied theater studies at Ghent University. Their performances explore the use of journalistic and documentary elements in theater. Their artistic practice is based on extensive field research, which they use to shape their projects.
In 2015, a major mining disaster occurred in southern Brazil, a few kilometers from the house where Silke grew up. An investigation into the consequences of the disaster became the starting point for their first theater performance, Mining Stories. The performance premiered in 2016 at the Bâtard Festival in the Beursschouwburg in Brussels and enjoyed an extensive run in more than fourteen different countries. Mining Stories was selected for Circuit X (Belgium) in 2017 and received the grand prize at the Zürcher Theaterspektakel (Switzerland) in 2018.
Voor hun tweede theatervoorstelling Pleasant Island zette het duo de thematische focus rond mijnbouw verder. De voorstelling zoomt in op de impact van grootschalige mijnbouw in een eindige omgeving. Hiervoor reisden Silke en Hannes naar het eiland Nauru in de Stille Oceaan dat volledig werd leeg gemijnd en ontnomen van zijn natuurlijke grondstoffen. Pleasant Island ging in 2019 in première op het Kunstenfestivaldesarts in Brussel, en is het komende jaar te zien met een uitgebreide speelreeks in binnen- en buitenland.
Silke en Hannes werken momenteel aan een nieuw project over diepzeemijnbouw. Met dit project sluiten ze hun trilogie rond mijnbouw af. Hun werk wordt ondersteund en geproduceerd door kunstencentrum CAMPO in Gent (België).
