Edurne Rubio

With her performative installations, Spanish-Belgian artist Edurne Rubio (1974) explores the intersection between visual art, performing arts, and audiovisual work. She initially created visual art, short videos, and small performances. This hybrid work found its way to KWP, and in 2013 Rubio expressed her desire to create a performance in the black box for the first time. She wanted to tell the story of her father and his brothers, who, as amateur speleologists in the 1980s and 1990s, discovered several important caves. At the same time, these caves symbolized the underground resistance against the dictatorship of the time.

This exciting undertaking resulted in the performance Light Years Away (2014), a gem that yields new data with every performance. Rubio then made the film Ojo Guarana and created projects in situ’ at the request of both Conde Duque and GC Elzenhof. In 2021, together with Spanish artist Maria Jerez, she presented the large-scale production A Nublo, in which they explore how natural phenomena can be recreated within the theater.
