Edurne Rubio
Edurne Rubio (Bilbao, 1974) is a Spanish-Belgian artist whose work inhabits the intersection of visual arts, performing arts, and cinema. Since moving to Belgium 25 years ago, she has developed a hybrid practice rooted in long-term research periods. Her trajectory evolved from visual arts toward the performing arts and film, consistently maintaining an experimental character and a strong visual focus.
Her oeuvre explores the complex relationship between humanity, landscape, and (political) memory. A pivotal moment in her artistic career was the performance Light Years Away (2016, KWP), in which she connected her father’s speleological discoveries to the underground resistance against the Spanish dictatorship. This theme continued in her film Ojo Guareña (2018, Argos Centre). More recently, Rubio investigated meteorological phenomena, as seen in the large-scale production A Nublo (2021, KWP).
Currently, within her longterm project MIST, she is working on the performance TINIEBLAS (2026, KWP), the fiction film MIST (2027, Hilife), and a documentary for WIELS (2026). Additionally, Rubio frequently creates in situ works for partners such as Argos, Kaaitheater, and the Spanish National Drama Centre. As a guest lecturer, she shares her expertise with institutes like a.pass and ERG. Her work consistently transforms local, personal histories into universal, sensory experiences that reach a broad international audience.
