Hope in the Feminine
Elikia emits a sound, a syllable, begins to move. She does not understand what she is saying, for her language is foreign to her. Languages, countries — they do not yet exist… She is only sound, syllable, percussion. And yet, she already wants to say something.
Little by little, the sound becomes a song, the syllables turn into words. She remembers her mother, her grandmother, all the women within her who uttered this sound before her.
And she dances that fire, she sings that water.
But what does she want to tell us?
Let’s listen…
Elikia is an encounter between women artists from Kinshasa and Brussels. A meeting of their voices, their languages, their sounds and songs, their movements and traditions. A search for connection in a world ruled by division.
“Elikia” means hope in Lingala. Where do we draw hope from?
This project blends music, dance, and theatre to offer a response that is plural and feminine. Elikia speaks of the woman who moves through life, at times with strength, at times with tenderness. Whether in Belgium, in Congo, or elsewhere in the world.
