Juan Dominguez

Juan Dominguez is an artist, maker, and orga­ni­zer within the fields of cho­re­o­grap­hy and per­for­ming arts, based in Berlin and Mexico City. He con­si­ders himself a con­cep­tu­al clown, unres­trai­ned nar­ra­tor, and cura­tor of plea­su­re. Since 1992, he has been pro­du­cing his own work, explo­ring the­a­tre as a medi­um and rede­fi­ning the para­me­ters of dan­ce — body, time, spa­ce. Over the last 24 years he has enga­ged in pro­jects that could be labe­led as expand­ed cho­re­o­grap­hic prac­ti­ces or at the inter­sec­ti­on bet­ween dan­ce and live art. Over the­se years one major con­cern has been rethin­king the poli­ti­cal poten­ti­al of the­a­tre by con­stant­ly ques­ti­o­ning the­a­tri­cal con­ven­ti­ons and Western expecta­ti­ons of spec­ta­tor­ship. The second con­stant con­cern has been time, both as a topic and raw mat­ter to expe­ri­ment with. His recent foray into cera­mics marks a new dia­lo­gue with the visu­al arts. Throughout his career, Dominguez has par­ti­ci­pa­ted in over 40 pro­duc­ti­ons as a dan­cer, per­for­mer, or dra­ma­tur­ge. He regu­lar­ly men­tors and coa­ches stu­dents and pro­fes­si­o­nals in cho­re­o­grap­hy and the­a­tre, having taught clas­ses and work­shops across Europe, China, Russia, and South America. Since 2001, he has lived and wor­ked in Berlin, whe­re he was a resi­dent artist at Podewil/​TanzWerkstatt in 2004 and 2005. In 2015 he had a researcher posi­ti­on at apass Brussels. From 2016 to 2022, he was an artist with Tanzfabrik Berlin and Buda Kortrijk as part of the European net­work apap — advan­cing per­for­ming arts pro­ject. Alongside his work as a per­for­mer, cho­re­o­grap­her, and direc­tor, he is also enga­ged in cura­to­ri­al acti­vi­ties sin­ce 2003
