Asa Horvitz is a direc­tor, cho­re­o­grap­her, and composer/​musician who cre­a­tes mul­ti­dis­ci­pli­na­ry per­for­man­ces. These works are often devel­o­ped over many years and take sha­pe across mul­ti­ple for­mats (books, records, web­si­tes, instal­la­ti­ons).

Starting from rhythm and the re-orga­ni­za­ti­on of time and spa­ce, he lay­ers archi­val and ori­gi­nal mate­ri­als (dan­ce forms, ima­ges, text, music and sound) into com­plex situ­a­ti­ons that unfold over long dura­ti­ons, ope­ning zones whe­re spec­ta­tors slip into unex­pec­ted ways of being with them­sel­ves and others.

Raised in a fami­ly of musi­cians in rural Northern California, Horvitz began making expe­ri­men­tal per­for­man­ces as a teen­a­ger and later stu­died music com­po­si­ti­on with Alvin Lucier and Anthony Braxton at Wesleyan University. Formative expe­rien­ces inclu­ded years in the New York City DIY sce­ne, a Fulbright scho­lar­ship in Warsaw, and col­la­bo­ra­ti­on with the Socìetas Raffaello Sanzio.

His works have been pre­sen­ted inter­na­ti­o­nal­ly at venues such as deSingel, BOZAR, Het HEM, Het Muziekgebouw, SPRING Performing Arts Festival, brutWien / Musiktheatretage Wien, The New Museum, Public Records, and in many under­ground con­texts.

He has recei­ved research or resi­d­en­cy sup­port from Muzeum Susch, ImPulsTanz, CAMPUS / Municipal Theatre of Porto, KWP Pianofabriek, Goethe Institut Hong Kong, and Ahas Kusa (Sri Lanka). Collaborations inclu­de Carmen Quill, Wayne Horvitz, Anna Webber, Kalup Linzy, Pavel Zustiak, and Scott Gibbons / Romeo Castellucci.

In 2023, Horvitz com­po­sed the VR ope­ra Songs For A Passerby (dir. Celine Daemen), which recei­ved the Lion for Best Immersive Project in the Venice Biennale and tour­ed inter­na­ti­o­nal­ly. The record GHOST (with Carmen Quill, Wayne Horvitz, and Ariadne Randall) was relea­sed in 2025. His work has been fea­tu­red on WNYC/NPR, the BBC, the jour­nal MASKA, and in many other publi­ca­ti­ons.

Since 2013 he has stu­died psy­cho­ana­ly­sis and various methods of wor­king with dreams and inner ima­ges, and is a cer­ti­fied prac­ti­ti­o­ner of Embodied Imagination. He gra­du­a­ted from DAS Theatre in Amsterdam in 2021, and is a for­mer Camargo and MacDowell fel­low. He is a con­tri­bu­ting edi­tor at The Anarchist Review of Books.
